About Handwriting Repeater

Last updated 24 September 2026

Handwriting Repeater is a free tool and reference site for teaching correct handwriting in UK schools. It shows letters and words written stroke by stroke, and it explains how UK schools teach letter formation, joins and style.

Who Built It, And Why?

Handwriting Repeater is an independent UK website. It was built because the free handwriting repeaters online were either American, showed letters in a font, or could not show where a letter starts and which way it moves. UK classrooms need a model that matches the way UK schools teach, on the board, in seconds.

The aim is narrow on purpose. A model on the board has to be correct, quick to set up, and free of anything that does not belong in front of a class. Everything here is built around those three things.

How Are The Letterforms Made?

Every letter, number and join in the tool comes from stroke data: the start point, direction, order and finish of each stroke. A font cannot show those, so we drew them.

Every lowercase letter, capital and number was checked on 25 September 2026 against at least two published UK teaching models: Oak National Academy's Year 1 and Year 2 handwriting lessons, Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, BBC Bitesize and the DfE writing framework, with UK school number rhymes for the numbers. The check covered where each stroke starts, which way it goes, the order of the strokes and when the pencil lifts. It led us to redraw 13 characters, including k without a pencil lift and q with a flick. Where the sources disagree, for example a loop on k, bars on capital I, or 5 with or without a lift, we show one form and name the other on that letter's card. If your school teaches a letter differently, tell us and we will add it.

Where Do The Facts Come From?

Curriculum statements are quoted from the source with the date checked. The main sources are:

  • the Department for Education's National Curriculum in England: English programmes of study (2014)
  • the DfE's non-statutory writing framework (July 2025)
  • the EYFS statutory framework and the DfE's early years guidance
  • National Handwriting Association publications
  • BBC Bitesize and Oak National Academy for how letters and joins are named and taught
  • NHS occupational therapy guidance for anything about grip, posture and development

Where sources disagree, we say so and show the range instead of picking one. The clearest case is letter families: BBC Bitesize uses four, and the DfE writing framework lists five typical groups.

What This Site Is Not

It is not a handwriting scheme, and it is not affiliated with any scheme, publisher or exam board. It does not name a best scheme. It does not diagnose anything: pages about reversals, grip or dyspraxia give general information and point to the class teacher, the SENCo, a GP or NHS occupational therapy.

How Is The Site Paid For?

The site is free and funded by display advertising on some guide pages. Ads never appear on the Handwriting Repeater tool, the games or the worksheet generator, and advertisers have no say in what we write.

How Do I Report A Mistake?

We correct errors quickly and say what changed. Use the contact page and tell us the page, the sentence and the source you are checking against. Corrections to curriculum wording are checked against the official text and dated on the page.

Accessibility And Privacy

The tool is built to work without an account and without sending what you type or record anywhere. Read the privacy notice, the cookie notice and the accessibility statement.
